As one of the most important representatives of the École de Paris, Serge Poliakoff developed an independent form of abstract painting in the 1950s. The present work demonstrates how the artist implements his unique geometric vocabulary. Organically appearing, irregular polygons are arranged on a plane instead of geometrically precise forms, set in tension with one another and contrasted through colour. Two overlapping, subtly differing shades of red fill a large part of the pictorial surface and, together with the interwoven fields of colour in black, blue, and white, form gentle silhouettes. While the colours flow into and diverge from one another, light and darkness create a spatial interplay. Poliakoff applies self-mixed colours with brushstrokes that are sometimes feather-light, sometimes grainy, and sometimes smooth. In this way, he creates a lively interplay of structural and tonal effects. Although the forms are asymmetrical and partly angular, the work radiates great balance and calm.

Erläuterungen

Als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter der École de Paris entwickelte Serge Poliakoff in den 1950er-Jahren eine eigenständige Form abstrakter Malerei. Das vorliegende Werk verdeutlicht, wie der Künstler sein einzigartiges geometrisches Vokabular umsetzt. Organisch wirkende, unregelmässige Polygone werden anstelle von geometrisch exakten Formen auf einer Ebene angeordnet, zueinander in Spannung gesetzt und durch Farben kontrastiert. Zwei überlappende, sich subtil unterscheidende Rottöne füllen einen Grossteil der Bildfläche aus und bilden mit den ineinander verschlungenen Farbfeldern in Schwarz, Blau und Weiss sanfte Silhouetten. Während die Farben ineinanderfliessen und voneinander abweichen, erzeugen Licht und Dunkelheit ein räumliches Wechselspiel. Poliakoff trägt selbst gemischte Farben mit Pinselstrichen auf, die mal federleicht, mal körnig und mal glatt sind. So schafft er ein lebhaftes Zusammenspiel von strukturellen und tonalen Effekten. Obwohl die Formen asymmetrisch und teilweise kantig sind, strahlt das Werk eine grosse Ausgewogenheit und Ruhe aus.
