Very beautiful, impeccable cast with dark brown patina
For the bronze "Buste d'homme", Alberto Giacometti's younger brother Diego (1902-1985) served as the model. Alongside Alberto's wife Annette, he posed most frequently and tirelessly for his sculptures. The bronze belongs to an important series of male heads and busts created in the mid-1950s. Already in the bronze "Diego au manteau" from 1954, the body appears much larger in proportion to the head due to the thick coat. In the present work "Buste d'homme", the result of several years of reflection, Alberto reduces the size of the head in relation to the body so much that it appears as if it is the peak of a mountain. (Yves Bonnefoy, Alberto Giacometti, Eine Biografie seines Werkes, Bern 1992, p. 437).
The bronze was not cast until 2006 in a total edition of ten authorized casts – from 1/8 to 8/8 as well as two additional examples inscribed "Fondation A.A. Giacometti" and "Alberto Giacometti Stiftung", which are held in the respective collections in Paris and Zurich. Until 2006, the only version was the plaster sculpture of the same name in the collection of Franz Meyer (1919-2007) in Zurich. Franz Meyer was director of the Kunsthalle Bern from 1955 to 1961 and subsequently director of the Kunstmuseum Basel. In 1956, the year the plaster sculpture was created, he organized one of the first major Alberto Giacometti exhibitions in Switzerland at the Kunsthalle Bern.
