With a pencil study of the head from "Animal I" (Kornfeld/FAAG 9) on the reverse. The paper is slightly browned, with water stains at the lower sheet edge. The lower edge is irregular, with a fine fold in the upper left corner. With drawing pin holes at the top centre and in all four corners, traces of old mounting on the reverse. In good condition
The graphic was intended as an illustration for André Breton's 1934 publication "L'air de l'eau", but was not used.
In the catalogue raisonné, this sheet is the only known example of "Le serpent II". The book "L'air de l'eau" is considered the last major work that Alberto Giacometti created in collaboration with the Surrealists and is one of the most important illustrated books of this period. Shortly afterwards, in December 1934, Alberto Giacometti broke with the circle of Surrealists.
