Comments

The composition is particularly daring in its depiction of the exposed female body. Such sheets were often subjected to the prudery of later centuries, so the untouched condition here is especially noteworthy. In this condition, therefore, of great rarity.

The nudity here is not an antique citation, but rather part of the program of this scene of rape, as famous as it is notorious. Aldegrever does not choose Lucretia's often virtuous suicide, which follows the act of violence, but instead shows the act itself, thus using it as a pretext for an explicit, almost pornographic pictorial realization. Like other Little Masters, he catered to both patrician and humanist circles of collectors of the time.

Erläuterungen

Die Komposition ist vor allem in der Darstellung des entblössten weiblichen Körpers überaus gewagt. Oft waren solche Blätter der Prüderie späterer Jahrhunderte ausgesetzt, sodass die unberührte Erhaltung hier besonders hervorzuheben ist. In dieser Erhaltung daher von grosser Seltenheit.

Die Nacktheit ist hier nicht antikisches Zitat, sondern gehört zum Programm dieser ebenso berühmten wie berüchtigten Vergewaltigungsszene. Aldegrever wählt hier nicht Lucretias oft tugendhaft ausgelegten Selbstmord, der der Gewalttat folgt, sondern zeigt die Tat selbst, nutzt sie somit als Vorwand einer expliziten, geradezu pornographischen Bildumsetzung. Wie andere Kleinmeister auch, bediente er die patrizischen ebenso wie humanistischen Sammlerkreise der Zeit.
