Very fine early impression, in nice condition, with the image fully visible, with some old restorations. A narrow strip has been added at both the top and bottom. The fine borderline is mostly fully visible
A major print by Martin Schongauer, which, together with three other large scenes of the same format from the life of Mary, was probably planned as part of a more extensive cycle that was never executed and was already created in the first half of the 1470s.
Proofs of state, that is, impressions from the still unfinished plate, are virtually unknown in early printmaking. This also applies to Schongauer’s work. Of the 115 known engravings, Lehrs notes a change of state during the artist’s lifetime for only four works (Lehrs 6, 33, 34, and 76). The first state of "Anbetung der Könige", first described in 1933 by William M. Ivins based on an impression in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, is therefore an exceptional rarity. Compared to later impressions, the star at the upper left has a completely different structure; in addition, the ornamental border of the cloak held by a servant at the right center of the composition still has a decorative pattern, and in the lower left corner, parts of the plant are not yet executed.

William M. Ivins, Jr., An Undescribed Schongauer Trial Proof, in: Metropolitan Museum Studies, New York, Bd. 4,
