    Comments

The woodcut is presented here in its first use in a book context, on the final leaf of the German translation of Scheurl’s „Sendbriefen“, published in 1515 by Peypus in Nuremberg. On the verso, one can see the Latin dedication, Peypus’ imprint, and printer’s mark. The outstanding print quality suggests that this is indeed the first use of the block, even though scholarship has repeatedly argued for a dating in the early Nuremberg journeyman years for stylistic reasons. Stylistically as well, in our opinion, this small sheet already displays the characteristics of Baldung’s mature style and does not have the appearance of a „Dürer manqué“, which often clings to the Nuremberg works.
