    Comments

This is an original design from 1907 for the illustrations of Daniel Baud-Bovy's novel "Vacances d'Artistes". The book was published in 1909 in Geneva. It contains 27 colour lithographs "hors-texte". Of these, ten are by Édouard Baud, four by Louis Dunki, two by Jules Fontanez, ten by Giovanni Giacometti, and one by Édouard Vallet. As templates for these coloured lithographs, Giacometti provided the publisher Max Girardet, director of Sonor, with drawings in watercolour over pencil in August 1907. These preliminary works were then transferred to stone by a lithographer of the publishing house. In addition to the ten lithographs depicted in the publication, Giacometti designed further sheets, which, however, were not used in the book and for which no lithographs were made. The present work is one of these. The work was created at the end of May/beginning of June or towards the end of July/beginning of August 1907, when Baud-Bovy and Giacometti were travelling by bicycle and on foot in Ticino and neighbouring northern Italy.
