    Comments

Birgit Prestøe (1898-1995) was probably the model for the three woodcuts 'Brigitte I', 'Brigitte II' and 'Brigitte III'. Munch also portrayed her several times at Ekely, see lots 992 and 994.

In 'Brigitte III' the drawing is more elaborately worked. The woodcut emphasises calm, a sense of form and inner composure. Munch's late female portraits show less conflict. They appear contemplative and formally considered.

This sheet is probably a hand-printed impression by the artist.
