The sheet surface is slightly rubbed in places. Slight grip marks, the corners with some bumping. A small tear at the upper left. Very fine impression with fresh colours
The woodcut 'Junge Frau am Strande' shows a female figure standing alone on the beach (see also lots 798 and 932). She gazes away from the water, almost statue-like. The beach stretches out before her, the sea is calm and the horizon is wide. Although the scene appears sparse, it is precisely in this simplicity that allows a quiet emotional depth to unfold. The figure represents longing, contemplation and perhaps also loss or unfulfilled desire.
The artist generally dispenses with dramatic gestures or excessive attention to detail. Instead, he uses the means of woodcut to work with surface, line and structure. 'Junge Frau am Strande' belongs to a series of landscape and figure depictions that Munch created around 1912. These are works of pause and inner reflection. The woman is situated in the in-between space of earth and water, solidity and movement, present and memory. The image thus becomes a metaphor for inner balance and symbolises a quiet but profound reflection on one's own existence.
The artist printed the sheet in only a few copies from an oak printing block.
