    Comments

Mondschein II' from 1902 has a similar composition to 'Mondschein I' (see lot 816), but was executed in a square format. The depiction appears rougher and more expressive. The woodcut is more angular, the lines more energetic, the surface more vibrant.

In both depictions, the woman stands isolated, almost lost in the night. The moonlight here does not serve as comfort, but as a projection surface for loneliness and unfulfilled longing. In both versions, Munch combines the woodcut with a Symbolist visual language. The technique, working with multiple blocks and the deliberate use of the wood grain, intensifies the emotional depth. 'Mondschein I' and 'Mondschein II' are thus not mere landscape depictions, but images of the soul. The nocturnal garden becomes a stage for inner conflicts, a metaphor for closeness and distance, light and darkness, memory and loss.

A hand-printed impression in four colours, probably pulled by the artist himself.
