    Comments

Edvard Munch used the metaphorical concept of a torn heart in two prints: first in 1896 for the etching offered here, and again in 1898 for the woodcut 'Das Herz - The Heart' (see lot 829). He cut the original rectangular copper plate in half. Munch then used this adapted, almost square plate, which shows a woman holding a bleeding heart far away from herself, for the illustration in the issue 'Quickborn' (Berlin 1899, Deutscher Kunstverlag A.G., 1899, 4th issue), produced together with August Strindberg. A poetic depiction of heartache.

The beautiful sheet was probably printed in Paris by Porcabœuf.
