Alongside his namesake Antoni Tàpies, Antoni Clavé is considered one of the most important Spanish artists of the postwar period. His style is not easily classified. He was inspired by the Catalan Primitives as well as by contemporary artists. Clavé was a great admirer of Pablo Picasso. Over the years, the Catalan moved closer to abstraction. In the 1950s, his work gained increasing recognition in his adopted homeland of France, where he had lived since 1939. After moving from bustling Paris to Saint-Tropez, he created his most significant works. Three years after the creation of "Œil rouge, gant blanc", a major retrospective was held in the artist's honor at the Centre Georges Pompidou. Our largely abstract composition from 1975 presumably depicts a head and a face with eyes and, as the title suggests, a white glove. The color designation is enigmatic. There is nowhere a red eye in the composition, although this is indicated on the reverse of the canvas, but only two blue dots that can be read as eyes.
