    Comments

Between 1916 and 1919, Amedeo Modigliani devoted himself intensively to depictions of nudes. Shown is a female nude model in three-quarter view, which for the artist is a typical mode of expression in full-figure representations. The standing figure holds her right arm alongside her body, while the left arm is raised and bent, covering her face. In contrast to Modigliani's portraits, in which the sitters are mostly known, as they are often prominent actors, writers, and artists, identification of this model is difficult. Stylistic features such as the elongated facial shape, the hairstyle, which is probably gathered into a bun or ponytail at the back of the head, as well as the eyebrows, suggest that the present nude could be Lunia Czechowska-Makowska (1894-1990), one of the artist's favourite models. Comparisons with portraits of Czechowska support this assumption.
