    Comments

One of the most important graphic works of the 19th century and, after the "Boxeurs" by Géricault, the first significant depiction of a sporting event. Horse racing emerged in the mid-19th century, and some races became true popular festivals, especially at the two venues Longchamps and Autheuil. Degas created the first pictures at horse racing tracks in 1862, Manet in 1864. The large oil painting from 1872, with a composition similar to the lithograph, is now in the collection of the Art Institute in Chicago.
