    Comments

As set out in the "Gussgeschichte" in the catalogue raisonné (p. 231 Ff.), We must assume at least 3, possibly up to 8 bronzes were produced during the artist's lifetime by the master founder Willy Geisler, Berlin. Apparently, Kollwitz did not have a cast made for herself, as she wrote to her son on February 21, 1944: [...] (In: Jutta Bohnke-Kollwitz 1992, p. 240).

Characteristic of the bronzes from the Geisler workshop is the absence of a foundry mark and a strikingly matte patina. Above all, however, the modelling of the face retains all its subtleties. Particularly noteworthy is the area around the eyes, where, beneath the right eye of the Baltimore example, three sharply contoured vertical lines describe folds. These are somewhat less pronounced in the present cast. Another feature is the clear lines in the hair, especially at the back of the head, which were incised into the clay with a coarse-toothed tool and complement the deep, woodcut-like line carving that roughly defines the hairstyle.

The work offered here is the bronze created during the artist's lifetime and documented in the catalogue of the Boston exhibition in 1939 with the lender Erich Cohn.

Februar 1944 an ihren Sohn schrieb: [...] (In: Jutta Bohnke-Kollwitz 1992, S. 240).
