    Comments

In the summer of 1912, Paul Klee stayed with his family in Bern. Before that, he was in Munich. There, on the occasion of the second exhibition of the "Blauen Reiters", he showed seventeen works. Shortly afterwards, he traveled to Paris, where he saw works of Cubism for the first time and visited Robert and Sonia Delaunay.

During his summer holiday in Switzerland, Klee went on hikes around Lake Murten, Lake Neuchâtel, and Lake Biel, but also made excursions towards the Bernese Oberland. His wanderings thus led him to Lake Thun. Our sheet shows the landing bay at Oberhofen with a choppy water surface. From the same year comes another work entitled "Blick auf den Seespiegel".

Our lake landscape, rendered in shades of grey and accented with black tempera, is united by the dynamic landscape section, the elements of an expressionist approach to painting technique, and the pictorial perspective into an atmospheric mood as a storm approaches.

On the left, the striking "Turmhaus" built in 1862/1863 in Tuscan country house style.
