    Comments

The drawing dates from Kandinsky's time as a teacher at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where, after three years in Weimar, he taught from 1925 onwards. After the forced relocation of the Bauhaus to Berlin in September 1932, he moved there, but in 1933 decided to leave Germany and settle in Neuilly-sur-Seine. At that time, Kandinsky still had several works stored in Berlin and in 1938 asked Ferdinand Möller to send them „for exhibition purposes" to the Kunsthalle Basel under its then director Lucas Lichtenhan. The collector Annie Müller-Widmann (1893-1964) from Basel acted as intermediary between Kandinsky and Lichtenhan. In the crate that arrived in Basel, containing 14 paintings, 12 watercolours and 9 drawings, was also the present sheet. The works were subsequently shown in exhibitions, including in Gstaad and Zurich, where eight of the nine drawings were demonstrably sold. In her introductory essay in the catalogue raisonné of the drawings, Endicott Barnett states that the present drawing was acquired in 1945 by Annie and Oskar Müller-Widmann. The work remained in the same family collection by inheritance until the auction in 1982. The collector couple had already acquired the painting "Einfach" by Kandinsky from 1927 at the Kunsthaus Zurich in 1929.

The work impresses with its balanced composition. It is no coincidence that in the summer of 1926 in Munich Kandinsky's programmatic treatise "Punkt und Linie zur Fläche.
