On the original stretcher, in the old nailing. With old craquelures. In impeccable condition
In this expressive painting, Pierre-Louis De la Rive captures the majestic wildness of the Alpine landscape at Lake Geneva in an impressive manner. The Torrent de Tréloup, a raging mountain stream near Saint-Gingolph, becomes the stage for a dramatic moment: a makeshift bridge of tree trunks has collapsed under the weight of a rider just as he was about to cross. Other travelers in a carriage come to a halt at the last moment. The monumental mountain world, masterfully modeled in light and shadow, is not merely a backdrop but emerges as a powerful symbol of humanity's struggle with nature.
De la Rive is regarded as one of the most important Swiss landscape painters of his time and an early pioneer of Romanticism. In works such as this, he combines topographical accuracy with an emotionally charged visual language. The composition guides the viewer's gaze from the detail—the dramatic moment of crossing—to the vast, overwhelming natural scenery, which radiates both tranquility and grandeur.

In tadelloser Erhaltung
