    Condition

Particularly fine impression in impeccable condition

    Comments

Certainly an early impression, still with numerous spots on the skin areas, which were probably cut away from the woodblock in later prints and no longer appear. Outstanding impression with fold mark (with strong traces on the reverse). With the retouching in ink mentioned by Hofmaier over the vertical split running through the woodblock, which also appears in prints from the first state.

The sheet was published in 1923 by the publisher J. B. Neumann in Berlin in a partially numbered edition of 40 copies, printed by Fritz Voigt in Berlin. In his catalogue raisonné, Hofmaier was able to verify 10 copies (in addition to 5 trial proofs in 2 different states), to which further copies have since been added. The Hotel Eden in Berlin became known through the murder of Rosa Luxemburg on January 15, 1919. The two people sitting at the bar have been identified as Johanna Loeb on the left and Elsita Lutz on the right. The man with the moustache is presumably Elsita Lutz's husband. Max Beckmann often stayed at Hotel Eden during his visits to Berlin. Exceptionally beautiful, very rare.

So schön sehr selten.
