    Comments

This small painting, probably created circa 1887, depicts an idyllic scene on the banks of the Seine: a single rowing boat (a 'périssoire') glides through the moving water, surrounded by green foliage and reflections of light. It is a study for Seurat's larger work, 'Bords de Seine à l'Île de la Grande Jatte' (WVZ 176), which is now in the collections of the Royal Museums in Brussels. This piece depicts the riverside landscape of the Parisian suburban island using a nuanced pointillist technique.

In our painting, Seurat's interest in the refraction of light on the water's surface and the interplay of individual dots of colour is evident. It seems as if he was still exploring the relationship between colour and light here. Our painting marks the transition to Pointillism. The short dabs of colour in the foliage and in the sky already herald its arrival.

The later inscription 'Seurat' at the lower right, which is illustrated in some catalogues, was removed some time ago.
