The sheet lightly browned and with light-struck edges. The right and lower margins with smoothed creases. Verso with traces of old mounting. A very fine impression in good condition
From 1901 onwards, Edvard Munch explored the theme of 'Girls on a Bridge'. By 1940, he had created twelve paintings and five prints on this subject. They depict three girls or young women standing at the railing of the pier in Åsgårdstrand at the end of the Oslofjord. Two look out over the water and one gazes thoughtfully at the viewer.
The bridge or pier serves as a symbolic space of transition and ambivalence, representing the divide between the past and the future, the inner and the outer worlds, as well as the conscious and the unconscious. The sheet was probably printed by Carl Sabo in Berlin.
