    Comments

This impressive painting by Claude Monet shows a sweeping view of the city of Rouen as seen from the heights of the Côte Sainte-Catherine. It belongs to a small group of city views that Monet created in 1892. These views are considered precursors to his light-filled series, such as the cathedral paintings. Monet spent several weeks in the city on the Seine from mid-February to mid-April, studying various motifs, as evidenced by preliminary drawings.

Although Monet painted the cathedral twice from this vantage point amid the diffuse sea of houses (CR nos. 1314 and 1315), it is barely visible in this painting. Here, he placed more emphasis on depicting the roofs of the suburbs and the industrial plants on the banks of the Seine with their smoking chimneys. Monet rarely addressed this theme so explicitly. The city almost disappears in the hazy light of early morning or late afternoon. The sky, consisting of grey, ochre and pale blue tones, stretches quietly and heavily over the wide panorama. The contours are only suggested and seem to dissolve into the air. This painterly effect brings the work close to the threshold of abstraction.

Despite the industrial subject matter, Monet remains true to Impressionism. Light, atmosphere and the fleeting moment determine the composition. The coal chimneys and factory buildings are not presented as criticism or social commentary, but as part of the changing landscape and a modern reality, which Monet captures with the same poetic gaze as nature.

A preparatory study for this painting is held at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris (inv. no. 5134).

Nr. 5134).
