    Comments

The equestrian statue is regarded as a topos of Western art history and, since antiquity, has been used to depict the triumphant power of the rider. By the late 20th century, this subject, made famous by Donatello and Michelangelo, was considered obsolete, though canonical. Marino Marini modernised it by using his equestrian statues to reflect the upheavals of his time, turning them into 'symbols of his concern'. The amputated limbs of the rider poignantly indicate a loss of control; he no longer masters his horse. The rider leans back, counteracting the tense posture of the horse, which is expressed through its convulsively outstretched neck and overstretched legs. Unlike Marini's other equestrian statues, which appear cheerful, this work is a vivid contemporary witness to the turbulent 1940s and the consequences of the Second World War, as evidenced by the mutilation of the human body. According to the Fondazione Marino Marini, the plaster was probably created in the 1940s. There are comparable works in bronze from this period, but this figure was never cast.
