With studio traces and slight signs of wear. In very fine overall condition
Alfred Kubin's early work is characterised by dark fantasies, grotesque mythical creatures and obsessive, dreamlike scenarios. Typical of this style is the use of intense, multi-layered colours that create a dreamlike-irrational, almost surreal atmosphere. In this picture, we encounter an exotic figure, the titular 'Kalif', whose clothing is sketched in fine yet flowing lines. He turns his gaze away from the viewer towards a dreamily misty landscape. The combination of watercolour and opaque paint gives the picture both lightness and expressive depth; light and dark areas of colour alternate and break through the linear structures.
The Caliph could be interpreted as a vision: an image of power that captivates more through suggestion than through clear reality. This is typical of Kubin's artistic worlds, where mysticism, dream logic and symbolic ruptures take centre stage.

Mit Atelierspuren und leichten Gebrauchsspuren. In sehr schöner Gesamterhaltung
