With a few grip creases and minimal tears at the sheet edges. A fold across the paper, but hardly visible from the front. Very fine, fresh condition
Sam Francis spent most of 1958 in Paris, while still maintaining important international connections. In 1957, he received commissions from Tokyo and Basel, and also exhibited his works in New York. These trips served to strengthen his ties with the international art market. Subsequently, he created smaller works on paper, including the present watercolour.
With a predominantly blue palette enriched by vibrant red colour accents, a vague yet powerful composition emerges. The fields of colour appear to float in the negative space, creating tension with the white void of the paper. The entire image is imbued with an unmistakable lightness. The painterly style appears spontaneous, like a snapshot of inner moods, and attests to Francis' fascination with detachment and intensity in the use of colour.
A few years after its creation, Francis gave the watercolour to his close friend and art dealer Eberhard W. Kornfeld. Their connection began in the mid-1950s, when the two met in Paris. From 1957 onwards, Kornfeld regularly exhibited Francis' works in his gallery in Bern.
