    Comments

Created in 1981/82, Jean Dubuffet's series 'Psycho-sites' is a late group of works that translates inner states into pictorial topographies. The title refers to 'mental places'; these are not real landscapes, but psychological spaces in which thoughts, feelings and memories take on a visual form.

The works depict people, sometimes alone and sometimes in groups, seemlingly engaged in dialogue in a kind of cell. The figures are not individual portraits, but rather archetypal forms that almost resemble signs or graffiti. Space here is not conceived in terms of perspective, but as a graphic field. The composition is characterised by structuring lines, between which areas of colour in strong hues are rhythmically placed. At first glance, the pictorial space appears like a chaotic yet rhythmically organised network. There is no perspective and no fixed point of orientation; the composition resembles a psychological map. In the 'Psycho-sites', Dubuffet brings his long-standing interests in automatism, sign language and anti-academic pictorial structures to a late high point.
