    Comments

In the mid-1950s, Sam Francis underwent a significant artistic development that had a lasting impact on his style. At first, he was inspired by American Abstract Expressionism and the influences of his Parisian artist colleagues, but then began to further develop his own visual language. He turned away from monochrome images and moved toward bolder colour compositions. During this period, Francis experimented intensively with watercolours, which allowed him to directly implement his characteristic lightness, transparency and movement. He placed luminous spots of colour on white canvases or paper, creating a sense of openness.

The present composition 'Blue Above Red' thrives on the interplay of colours and their luminosity, as well as the effect of the empty space between them. Dense, almost organic clusters of black, red, blue and the occasional hint of green dominate the centre-left of the sheet. This dark, pulsating mass seems to expand and simultaneously collapse in on itself - a visual paradox typical of Francis's painting style. The colour fields appear to have been applied intuitively, while fine splashes and flowing drops cover the paper around them.

The use of negative space is particulary striking. The white background is not just empty space, but an integral part of the composition. It gives the colours room to breathe, drawing attention to the movement and gesture involved in applying the colour. The seemingly unpainted area is filled with colour drippings. The watercolour flows, runs at the edges and appears both spontaneous and controlled. This is a powerful example of Francis's ability to unite spontaneity with compositional control - a balancing act that few artists of his generation mastered with such precision.
