    Comments

Sam Francis's artistic career began during a long hospital stay, which he had to endure due to a severe back injury sustained in World War II. There, he discovered painting as a means of expression and, after his recovery, studied art at the University of California in Berkeley. In 1950, he moved to Paris, where he met the Canadian painter Jean-Paul Riopelle, who had already been living there since 1946. He gradually joined the other American painters who had also come to Paris: Al Held, Shirley Jaffe, Kimber Smith, Norman Bluhm and Joan Mitchell.

Influenced by his artist colleagues' Tachisme and Abstract Expressionist works, Francis produced his first monochrome pieces. However, Francis soon returned to the qualities of light and colour from a muted palette of grey and white tones. The works from this period are characterised by dynamic fields of colour, open compositions and a deep interest in space and the effect of colour.

The present work 'Green' is distinguished by the intensive use of green in various shades. Although formally monochrome, it appears anything but monotonous due to the lively brushwork, transparent layers of colour and subtle light effects. The green seems to be in motion, which is a characteristic of Francis' dynamic handling of colour. The work impressively demonstrates how the artist was able to create visual depth and emotional power from a single colour.
