    Comments

In 1914, Marc Chagall presented his first solo exhibition in Germany at the renowned Berlin gallery Der Sturm, directed by Herwarth Walden. This exhibition was a milestone in Chagall's early career and at the same time a significant event in the European art scene before the First World War.

Around 200 works were exhibited, including paintings, watercolours, gouaches, and drawings. They depicted motifs from Chagall's childhood and youth in Vitebsk. Scenes of everyday life, religious rituals, weddings, animals, houses and flying figures were combined with dreamlike elements to create a unique, poetic visual language. In his painting style, Chagall combined elements of Fauvism and Cubism with a deeply rooted symbolism. Strong colours and formal alienation emphasised his expressive power.

At that time, the Galerie Der Sturm was an important venue for the avant-garde. Artists such as Kandinsky, Franz Marc, Klee or Kokoschka had already exhibited there. Herwarth Walden recognised Chagall's talent early on and promoted him in particular. The exhibition was received by Berlin art critics partly with skepticism, but also elicited admiration for Chagall's original style. His paintings were considered deeply emotional, foreign and at the same time fascinating.

In Marc Chagall's exhibition at Galerie Der Sturm in 1914, an unusual presentation method was used: many of the works on paper were mounted by Nell Walden, Herwarth Walden’s wife, on one or two differently coloured backgrounds. These backgrounds served not only as an aesthetic framing but deliberately emphasized the luminosity and expressiveness of the works. The often strong colours appeared complementary or contrasting to Chagall's own colour choices and highlighted central motifs.

At the same time, this method of presentation reflected the avant-garde attitude of the gallery: Herwarth Walden sought new ways of presenting art to emphasise its independence. The coloured framing gave the often small-format works an additional presence in the exhibition space, supporting Chagall's aim of making his pictorial world experienceable as something modern through an expansion of space.

The odalisque is an art-historical type that was especially widespread in European painting of the 18th and 19th centuries. It is a depiction of a mostly reclining or resting woman, often nude or semi-clad, staged as a harem lady of an Ottoman ruler. The term 'odalisque' derives from the Turkish 'odalık', meaning 'woman of the harem'.

In art, the odalisque symbolised not only sensuality but also the Western projection of an exotic, mysterious and foreign Orient. Chagall shows his great 'Odalisque' in the open air; behind the woman, a mythical animal can be seen. Could this be an early reference to the creature described in his iconography as a 'mystic animal', representing the influence of creativity? An exciting composition of a sculptural nude in radiant colours.
