    Comments

In the mid-19th century, modern means of transport such as railways and omnibuses were not ubiquitous. Everyday routines that are now commonplace - arriving at the station, buying a ticket, waiting for the train, finding the right platform and finally sitting next to strangers in the same compartment during the journey - had to be experienced and learnt, and represented a great adventure. Numerous artists attempted to depict this newfound modernity in their paintings and drawings. Honoré Daumier, too, was fascinated by these new means of transport. However, rather than focussing on the vehicles themselves, he concentrated on the travellers and the newly emerging social class differences associated with them. Consequently, he created a series of works showing train compartments filled with travellers from the three social classes. The present piece is probably a study for a watercolour ('Maison no. 303'), which is in the Oskar Reinhart Collection in Winterthur. Unlike in the watercolour, it shows the various stages of the artist's process: Daumier first drew the composition with charcoal or chalk, then added ink to emphasise the shadows and finally completed the details, such as facial expressions and clothing, with pencil and ink.
