On the right side and below outside the image with a small stain, with a few grip marks. On the reverse with traces of an old mounting. In very good condition
Created in Stampa in the summer of 1959, the present work features, in the background, the backrest of a chair carved with an owl motif, which Giovanni Giacometti had made for his children. Apples and pears are popular motifs in Giacometti's work. They often appear in his works, either individually or several arranged in a bowl or on a kitchen table. The fruits never fill an entire work, but are often depicted reduced in size at the centre of the composition. This approach to rendering an object can already be seen in Giacometti's early work. The artist recounts: ‘When I was 18 or 19, I once drew some pears on the table in my father’s studio, from a distance that would be consistent with a still life. But they kept getting smaller. I started again, but they ended up the same small size. My father [Giovanni Giacometti] told me angrily: "Just once, depict them the way they really are, the way you see them." He then drew them life-size on my sheet. I tried to draw them the same way, but I had to erase them - I erased them, and half an hour later my pears were, accurate to the millimetre, exactly the same size as they had been the first time.’ (in: Hohl 1987, p. 230).

In sehr guter Erhaltung
(In: Hohl 1987, S. 230).
