The drawing was originally part of one of the albums in the Cheney Collection. This contained around 70 variations by Tiepolo on the theme of the Holy Family and the Rest on the Flight into Egypt. The sheets were probably created in the decade after Tiepolo's return from Würzburg in 1753, and he left the albums to the Somasco Monastery before his departure for Madrid in 1762. George Knox dates the majority of these drawings to the years 1754 to 1762 and suggests that the sheets should be understood as self-contained works of art. They demonstrate Tiepolo's maturity and brilliance as a draughtsman and are a virtuoso handling of the visual dialogue between the white background of the paper and the lines and washes applied with the utmost confidence.
