    Comments

A mighty warship arrives in the harbour of a city where there is a great deal of activity. The sails are reefed and a cannon salute is fired in greeting, causing powerful smoke to rise. While another sailing ship is anchored in the background on the left, smaller boats can be seen in the foreground and centre ground, some loaded with cargo and others with people, providing the staffage, so to speak. Although sketched, the detailed composition is so well-balanced that it could have served directly as a model for a painting. It is reminiscent of van de Velde's famous painting "The Cannon Shot" in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum.
