Comments

The existence of "duplicate drawings" testifies both to the popularity of Molijn's drawings among his contemporaries and to their character as art or collectors' items. In 1997, Hans-Ulrich Beck, probably the best expert of Molijn's work, published a compilation of such pairs of drawings, which the artist made himself, apparently to satisfy the demand for particularly popular motifs. It is noteworthy that the Kornfeld Collection contains two examples of drawings, each of which has been proven to exist in two versions (see lot 2144).

Erläuterungen

Ein Beleg für die Beliebtheit von Molijns Zeichnungen unter seinen Zeitgenossen, aber auch für deren Charakter als Kunst- bzw. Sammlerstücke, ist die Existenz von "duplicate drawings". Hans-Ulrich Beck, der wohl beste Kenner des Werks, veröffentlichte 1997 eine Zusammenstellung solcher Zeichnungspaare, die der Künstler selbst anfertigte, offenbar um die Nachfrage nach besonders beliebten Bildmotiven zu befriedigen. Es ist bemerkenswert, in der Sammlung Kornfeld gleich zwei Beispiele von Zeichnungen zu finden, von denen jeweils zwei Versionen nachgewiesen werden konnten (siehe unser Los 2144).
