    Comments

After years of little drawing around 1630/40, during which Pieter Molijn was active on the board of the Guild of St Luke and probably also very busy with non-artistic matters (1631-49), the artist began to draw extensively. This arguably most productive drawing phase in the last decade of his life is impressive both in terms of quantity as well as productivity. Molijn had now found his distinctive style and black chalk as his preferred technique. Given that his works were from the outset conceived as collector's items, and were generally signed and dated, it can also be assumed that there was a great demand for his works among contemporary enthusiasts.

The present sheet is a characteristic work from this creative phase.
