Perfect condition, fragment of a larger ink drawing on the reverse (a foot is still recognisable in the upper right)
Nicolaes Maes belonged to Rembrandt's circle of pupils from around 1646 to 1653, whose drawing style he largely adopted. According to Werner Sumowski, the sheet is a preparatory drawing for the painting "Mother at the Cradle" from 1655, formerly in the possession of the Earl of Northbrook, most recently at Agnew's in London. The work is a beautiful and highly characteristic example of Maes' rapid pen and ink drawings.
