Comments

As a self-portrait in disguise, Goya depicts an old torero in front of a young bull. Even at the age of 80, he boasted that he had fought with bulls in his youth and that he was fearless when holding a sword in his hand. Nevertheless, the figure of the torero expresses the frailty and bitterness of old age.

Erläuterungen

Goya stellt einen alten Torero vor einem jungen Stier als verkapptes Selbstportrait dar. Noch im Alter von 80 Jahren brüstete er sich damit, in seiner Jugend mit Stieren gekämpft zu haben, und er sei furchtlos, wenn er ein Schwert in der Hand halte. Gleichwohl drückt die Figur des Toreros die Hinfälligkeit und Bitterkeit des Alters aus.
