The paper minimally browned, scattered stains. In very fine condition
After his initial training at the art academy in Hangtschou, Zao Wou-Ki emigrated to Paris in 1948, where he made the acquaintance of Henri Michaux, Alberto Giacometti and Maria Elena Vieira da Silva, among others. He learnt the technique of lithography at the Grande Chaumière. Shortly afterwards, he illustrated Harry Roskolenko's "Paris Poems", which were published by Éditions Euros in 1950 (Rivere 43-49; Ågerup 42-47). The 15 published special editions were accompanied by a suite of lithographs and an original watercolour. The present watercolour is very close in terms of motif, style and form to this series of prints and the original watercolours, but was created a year later.
In the course of his career, Zao increasingly moved away from representational painting and turned to a synthesis of Far Eastern calligraphy and European Informel. His extremely poetic and abstract paintings often evoke associations characterised by landscapes. The artist became an important link between Far Eastern art and European modernism.

Das Papier minim gebräunt, vereinzelte Fleckchen. In sehr schöner Erhaltung
