    Comments

The year 1977 marked a turning point in Jean Tinguely's work: his fountain designs gave commercial art a new meaning. The lamps, which the artist initially created exclusively for collector friends, were also intended for use. With the furnishing of the "Cafeteria zur Münz" on Bahnhofstrasse in Zurich (1983) or the "Café Galerie Tinguely" in Kyoto's main shopping street Karasuma-dori (1987), the lamps were then also used as installations on a larger scale. The highlight of his work as a light artist is certainly the "Luminator", a light sculpture created in 1991 for the Basel SBB railway station, which is now located at Basel-Mulhouse Airport. The light was the logical continuation of the kinetic sculptures, so to speak; it has an effect and reaches into the space with its shadows. The light objects are mostly exciting assemblages: the artist skilfully mounted garlands of light on a metal support. As always, the metal parts are found objects such as iron profiles, chains or screws, often supplemented with movable springs. Tinguely's lamps are poetic miniature installations with a great deal of humour and wit. The lamp on offer here was given to an artist friend so that he had enough light. As a special feature, Tinguely also integrated a candlestick in case the electricity failed.
