    Comments

After completing his studies, Sam Francis moved to Paris to further develop his unique form of abstract, expressive, raw and gestural painting. His work, which has made him one of the leading interpreters of colour and light, has references to New York Abstract Expressionism, Colour Field painting, Chinese and Japanese art and French Impressionism. His unique use of the white ground as part of the composition allowed him to give more space to colour. In Paris, his paintings also became larger and he was better able to realise his gestural painting. Time magazine even described him at the time as "the hottest American painter in Paris at the moment". However, his works on paper were particularly important in his entire oeuvre, as he was able to intervene directly and spontaneously in his work. The sheet offered here was made in Paris in the mid-1950s and is striking for its particular, rarely used colourfulness.
