In 1958, Christo came to Paris, the centre of the art scene at the time, where he soon met the protagonists of the European and American avant-garde. Christo tried to find his place in this melting pot. Rather by chance, as an experiment, he began wrapping everyday objects. In this way, he deprived them of their actual function, transformed them into art and preserved them for posterity. A direct, immediate and radical approach to art that soon gave him the idea of wrapping entire buildings, such as the striking building in Times Square. In 1968, the same year as the present work, Christo received permission to wrap the Kunsthalle Bern, the first building ever to be wrapped.

1958 kam Christo nach Paris, dem damaligen Zentrum der Kunstszene, wo er schon bald die Protagonisten der europäischen und amerikanischen Avantgarde kennenlernte. In diesem Schmelztiegel versuchte Christo seinen Platz zu finden. Eher zufällig, als Experiment, begann er mit der Verhüllung von Alltagsgegenständen. So entzog er ihnen ihre eigentliche Funktion, verwandelte sie in Kunst und bewahrte sie für die Nachwelt auf. Ein direkter, unmittelbarer und radikaler Kunstansatz, der ihn bald auf die Idee brachte, auch ganze Gebäude zu verpacken, wie hier das markante Hochhaus am Times Square. 1968, im selben Jahr wie die vorliegende Arbeit, erhielt Christo die Erlaubnis, die Kunsthalle Bern als erstes Gebäude überhaupt zu verhüllen.
