Comments

The actress portrayed is Marcelle Lender (real name Anne-Marie Marcelle Bastien). She was a great celebrity and played over 25 leading roles, including at the Théâtre des Variétés, the Théâtre du Gymnase Marie Bell and the Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Toulouse-Lautrec was enthusiastic about her and immortalised her in paintings and prints. The present sheet is very attractive, printed in brown on blue paper, so that the portrait literally shines out of the darkness. With an edition of only 35 copies, the print is very rare.
