Comments

May Belfort was born in Ireland around 1872 and worked as a comedian and singer, first in London's music halls and then in Paris. She performed her typically absurd songs at the "Des Décadents" café and the "Petit Casino". She commissioned the fashionable artist Toulouse-Lautrec to design a poster for her, showing her in a striking red dress. Toulouse-Lautrec must have attended many of her performances, and this is where the template for the present print was made. There are three states of the print. In this third state, the drawing stone was extended and the background printed in a greenish-black colour. The sheet is from the second edition, with the signature and monogram stamp at the bottom right.

Erläuterungen

May Belfort wurde um 1872 in Irland geboren und war als Komikerin und Sängerin zuerst in den Londoner Music Halls, dann in Paris tätig. Sie trug etwa im Café "Des Décadents" oder im "Petit Casino" ihre typischen absurden Lieder vor. Sie beauftragte den angesagten Künstler Toulouse-Lautrec, ein Plakat für sie zu gestalten, das sie in auffällig rotem Kleid zeigt. Der Künstler wird viele ihrer Aufführungen besucht haben, wo sicherlich auch die Vorlage zum hier angebotenen Blatt entstand. Es existieren drei Druckzustände. Beim hier vorliegenden dritten Zustand wurde der Zeichnungsstein erweitert und der Hintergrund in einem Grünschwarz gedruckt. Das Blatt stammt aus der zweiten Auflage, mit der Signatur und dem Monogrammstempel unten rechts.
