    Comments

May Belfort was born in Ireland around 1872 and worked as a comedian and singer, first in London's music halls and then in Paris. She performed her typically absurd songs at the "Des Décadents" café and the "Petit Casino". She commissioned the fashionable artist Toulouse-Lautrec to design a poster for her, showing her in a striking red dress. Toulouse-Lautrec must have attended many of her performances, and this is where the template for the present print was made. There are three states of the print, of which our sheet is the first. In the first state, only the drawing stone was printed in green and black; 13 impressions are known.
