    Comments

Ursel Berger includes the present small sculpture among the so-called Vollard editions. At the suggestion of Ambroise Vollard, Aristide Maillol created a series of figures after 1900, which he sold with all rights to his dealer. Vollard then issued unlimited editions of these figures. The contract dated 10 September 1902 contains the entry "petite statue femme à genoux". The caster cannot be identified with certainty because the figure is unusually closed from below. It was most likely cast by Florentin Godard, who worked for Vollard from 1907 and exclusively from 1909.
