    Comments

The present subject is from the 1929 series of portraits of Le Corbusier's wife Yvonne, a subject that the artist repeatedly took up and slightly varied in drawings and paintings over the course of time. It depicts a head with two differently coloured and shaped halves of the face, above which are crossed hands. The right half in yellow stands for the sun and life, the left, darker side, emphasised with a white line, for restlessness and questions.

This gouache is one of a group of four preparatory works for a large enamel painting made from four enamelled panels of the same size, which the artist produced in 1959 and which were acquired by his friend, the banker Jean-Pierre de Montmollin.

We would like to thank Naïma Jornod for her kind information.
