    Comments

For the German-American Lyonel Feininger, the small towns on the Baltic Sea or the dreamy Weimar countryside in Thuringia provided the perfect backdrop for his artistic explorations. It was the idyllic small towns with their churches and picturesque village centres - such as Gelmeroda, Niedergrunstedt, Possendorf, Vollersroda, Zottelstedt and Taubach - that provided him with ideal motifs. At the beginning, he painted the views of these places with his typical figures (as in the sheet offered here), later he realised the works as pure, almost abstract architectural views.

He once commented to Alfred Kubin that there were church spires in these "godforsaken places" that were incredibly mystical. In Taubach, it is the massive Protestant church of St. Ursula that he depicts in particular in the two-colour watercolour. He skilfully contrasts the dark purple sky with the fine, light blue contours of the small town. A figure with Feininger's typical hat walks away from the church, the trees in front of the church hold the two worlds of heaven and earth together like a bracket.

An impressive watercolour, created shortly before Feininger was appointed as Walter Gropius' first master at the Bauhaus in Weimar.
