The basis for Daumier's "little figures" were terracottas that the artist created between around 1840 and 1862. The terracotta for this sculpture is in the collection of Marcel Lecomte, Paris, who acquired it from Maurice Loncle. Maurice Loncle had an edition of 30 cast by Valsuani in the early 1950s. The Daumier register notes that the bronze was produced on 28 February 1955, according to Valsuani's order book.
