    Comments

An exciting still life, an interior on the Oschwand. From 1918, Amiet worked increasingly in sculpture, in stone or clay. He created numerous busts, for example of his wife Anna, artist friends and collectors. In 1922, the artist worked on a bust of the collector and lawyer Max Gmür, at whose holiday home in the Bernese Oberland he stayed in the summer of 1921.

The picture bears a small stylised flame next to the monogram in the lower right-hand corner; Amiet added this symbol to his works from 1931 onwards, having lost a large number of his early paintings in the fire at the Munich Glaspalast in 1931.
