Very beautiful, impeccable cast with dark brown, minimally rubbed patina. Wooden base with water stains
In Greek mythology, Amphion is the son of Antiope and Zeus, the twin brother of Zethos and, with him, ruler of Thebes. He was given a lyre by Hermes. His talent and love of music proved to be very helpful in the construction of Thebes: the stones are said to have joined together as if by magic when he played his lyre.
In 1937, Laurens created a small and a large version of "Amphion". He designed the third and largest sculpture of "Amphion" in 1952 at the request of the architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva for the Universidad Central in Caracas, Venezuela.
The wooden plinth of the present bronze (no. 4/6) served as a model for the artist to develop the final volumes and then to cast the figure together with the bronze plinth. The plinth became an integral part of the artwork, in contrast to casts no. 1-3, which were conceived without this plinth. The bronze with wooden plinth offered here is therefore to be regarded as a transitional work.
We would like to thank Quentin Laurens (Galerie Louise Leiris), the artist's grandson, for this information.
